Lancer Community Service Recognition

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world.  Indeed, it’s the only thing that has.”

Margaret Mead

Laguna Middle School students are acknowledged annually for their efforts volunteering on campus and in the community. The acknowledgement occurs at the awards evening every May.  Local dignitaries congratulate Laguna Middle School students who complete 30 hours or more of community service during the school year.

Many educational studies have shown that volunteering helps to weave the fibers of a strong, vital, healthy community. The act of volunteering also helps to reinforce a multitude of the “40 Developmental Assets” so important for a successful student’s maturation

Several non-profit agencies, including the public schools, depend on the generosity of volunteers to fulfill a multitude of tasks.  Without these caring souls, some non-profits would simply cease to exist.

Personally, volunteers benefit in that they are able to hone interpersonal and organizational skills.  By volunteering, a Laguna Middle School student can experience a new job site, explore a new career goal and become acquainted with the demands within certain fields without the obligations of a regular job. In the past, many Lancers have volunteered at local environmental clean-up days, places of worship, political campaign offices and non-profit charity events to accrue their hours. All have matured through their commitment to the community!

In order to be recognized in May at the award ceremony, a student must complete and submit the Verification of Community Service form now available in the Main Office, Counseling Center, and in Room G14. All forms must be received by May 5th annually for a student to be honored publicly.
