Upsettng the Balance: The northern-controlled House passed the document, but in the Senate, the South had more power. The Wilmot Proviso did not pass. Before this time, politicians had usually supported the ideas of their political parties. However, the Wilmot Proviso spurred a debate that showed growing sectionalism, or favoring the interests of one section or region over the interests of the entire country.

Fort Sumter The first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Although no one was killed there, what would become the bloodiest war in the country’s history had begun.

A House Divided- “In my opinion, it [disagreement over slavery] will not cease [stop], until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. The Maya civilization reached its height between about AD 250 and 900. Historians call this period of Maya history the Classic Age. During the Classic Age, Maya civilization spread to the Yucatán Peninsula and grew to include more than 40 cities of 5,000 to 50,000 people each.

Introduction:
By the year of 1860, the United States was developed into extremely different sections. The two sections, North and South, tried to force its point of view on the nation as a whole. Even though negotiations had kept the Union together for many years, in 1860 the condition was unstable. The presidential election of Abraham Lincoln was observed by the South as a risk to slavery and States’ Rights and many believe it was the end of our peaceful Union.
There were four years of American bloodshed on American soil. Why? The reasons are varied, but from the formation of America to 1860, the people in this country were divided. This division was a result of physical location, personal sentiments, and struggle for power between the federal government and the state government. Peace could not continue in a country filled with quarrels that affected the common American.
There is a common misconception that the American Civil War was fought only over slavery, when in fact there were several other reasons for why the Civil War or the War Between the States was fought.
