Soda

The name "Soda" came from the nineteenth century but began originally many centuries ago. In Biblical times there was bubbling waters from natural springs and for several centuries scientists have tried to duplicate the quality found in the naturally carbonated waters. An English scientist named Joseph Priestly began expierements in 1767 to "stimulate the fixed air in natural waters". He later found in one of his expierements that water absorbed the gas identified later as carbon dioxide, easily. This is the same "fizz" found in 7-Up and many other soda's. Priestly published his findings in a paper called "Directions for Impregnating Water with Fixed Air". The first carbonated soft drink was made in Philedalphia in 1807. This occured when Dr. Philip Syng Physick asked a chemist to prepare carbonated water for a patient. This is believed to be the begginging of soda. Of course it has evovled over the years greatly with different flavors being added to make different varieties of taste and color. The first U.S. patent to bottle soda water was Joseph Hawkins in 1809. This is how soda was started.
