Dear Tom,I heard that you have been struggling lately. It must be hard seeing an innocent man punished for so harsh a crime, and having Becky dump you on top of that! I have some advice, which I hope will help you out a little bit. If it doesn’t, it is still good to talk about your problems with someone.
First of all, I understand how hard it must be to witness the murder of Dr. Robinson. It probably makes it a lot worse to see poor Muff Potter punished wrongly. It might seem wrong right now, but I suggest that you tell the truth to somebody who can take care of it, and let Huck in on it. Convincing Huck might be pretty difficult, but you can try to persuade him with some of the reasons that I am giving you in this letter. That will work out, because you won’t be betraying Huck completely, and you will be doing the right thing for Muff Potter, as well as Injun Joe.
You won’t have to be threatened by Injun Joe if you do so, because he will be controlled by authorities. I can assure you that you won’t die if you don’t keep the secret. That is only a superstition, and although it might be hard to stop believing in it, you have to realize that it will help a good man out, and he will appreciate it deeply. You might as well give it a chance, because your anxiety can’t get much worse than it is now, judging by your sleeping habits.
Although in a while it will be the least of your worries, Becky is obviously bothering you greatly at the time. It’s got to hurt being dumped twice when you still liked her, and the fact that she just left the brass knob there without saying anything to you is terrible. I know that you are probably sincerely eager to win Becky back, and there is one way that is simple and that might help you a lot. All you have to do is use your butteriest flattery skills. If you tell her how great she is, and cut back on your boisterous showing-off, she might appreciate you a lot more. Anything flattering, even if it’s cheesy, will make her feel special.
At first she might not accept your compliments, but keep on going with true diligence, and you will be happy with the outcome! As soon as you have her within your grasp, pull out a flower or something else that is pretty, and she might just fall in love with you again. If she does, make sure that you don’t quit flattering her or get lazy, and stay consistent. I recommend this advice because it would be hard for her to resist.
Despite the following advice, stay hopeful in your attempts. If she doesn’t fall in love with you after you have tried flattering her thoroughly, you will have to try to get over her. Time heals all wounds. It sounds sad, but you could either try to go back to Amy Lawrence, who will probably accept you, or find somebody else. You probably won’t even have to be on the lookout; somebody new will catch your eye sooner or later.
I’m sorry that life is taking you in this direction, and I hope this letter has been helpful to you. Your Injun Joe worries are at their peak and won’t get any worse than this, and I’m sure Becky will come around. Good luck and stick with my advice!Sincerely,
Sloane Roeser
