500x500x500… the once
imaginary triple crown of the automotive world. It took an extraordinary
vehicle like Viper, and the all-out attitude of the new Performance Vehicle
Operations (PVO) group to make it a reality. After all, they’re the engineering
team that combines specialty vehicle and motor sports know-how to create
the outrageous family of high-performance Dodge SRT vehicles. So it came
as no surprise that they went up to the “500” line and, in true Dodge fashion,
laid rubber right across it. We’re talking a 505 cubic-inch engine. 500
horsepower. And 525 pound-feet of pavement melting torque. All under the
hood of a pulse-quickening, adrenaline rush-inducing convertible that continues
to capture the imagination of car enthusiasts around the world. The truth
is Viper has been somewhat of an icon ever since it rolled across the auto
show stage as a radical concept car. Now, it’s been totally redesigned
to be lighter, more precisely balanced and even better looking… oh yeah,
and faster. 2003 Dodge Viper SRT-10. Approach with caution. Because this
snake can fly.
This was the overview
for the 2003 Dodge Viper STR/10 on Dodge’s website. And believe me, this
snake can fly. I mean, the engine is 8.3 liters for crying out loud! That’s
the largest motor in the world in a production car. And think about it.
A Lamborghini Murcielago has an engine displacement of 6.2 liters. That’s
pretty much nothing compared to the Viper.
To summarize all of
this, the Viper has 500 horsepower, 525 ft. lbs. of torque, 505 cubic inches
of engine displacement, and is faster than its predecessor. Way faster.
