Catalina
Island Study Trip
By: Megan Clark
A memory that really
stands out in my mind is when we went kayaking on the fourth day. My partner
was Terry Roberts, our day chaperone. We first got on our booties, then
we got our vests and then we got our paddles. After we got our things we
headed over to the gravel area and our instructor taught us how to use
the paddles and he told us that the front person is the director, he meant
the front person leads the back person in the strokes. Everyone ran down
to the beach when he was done talking to get the kayaks, he untied them
and told us to grab one end of the kayak
and pull it down to where the water hit.
Then he told
us that the instructors would take us out one at a time and he told us
about the signals like to rack
up or to stop.
Finally we got
into the water and headed off to the buoys where we racked up and waited
for our instructor. He racked up with us and told us to head out and follow
him. We headed out and saw a couple of harbor
seals. The instructor told us to not to go to close to the harbor seals
so we respected that and we didn't go too close to them. We took pictures
of them, and then we had a contest to see who could stay on the kayak without
falling off. I came in second. Then we had a race around a certain area.
Terry and I got in first place, but I think it is because she has more
muscle than the rest of us.
After
the contest and the race we had a raid on Mr. Mushegan‘s group, of course
we won. We had to flip the other kayaks over by jumping out and then flipping
them over. Then we went out toward Avalon a little
bit and then racked up for a talk about the raid. Then we went back to
the buoys and headed in one at a time, while we were waiting to go in,
a couple of groups jumped out of the kayaks and swam around until we had
to go in. He pulled us in and we had to get out of the wet suits.
This trip to
Catalina is one that I know I will never forget. This is one of the best
memories that I have of Catalina, and if I could I would want to go back
again.
