The Victorian Era

~*~The Victorian Era was a period of time during the nineteenth century. The name, "Victorian Era", was given to this time period because it was the period of Queen Victoria's reign in Britain (1819-1901). The Victorian Era was a period of rapid change and diversification all around the world. Advances were being discovered in areas such as: medicine, science, and other aspects of technology. Population also began to grow during this period of time. Because of the fact that people were beginning to expand their views of technology, the Victorian Period was marked by new views of confidence and optimism for the country. Today, the nineteenth century is associated with family values, religious observation, and work ethic. In the nineteenth century, families were larger than they were today. However, women were offered more opportunities to have a life outside their homes. Educational and employment opportunities gave many people a role outside that of a home-maker. Organized feminism developed during this period, as well as liberalism and political demonstrations. Travel and leisure also became more advanced during the Victorian Period. Both travel and leisure were stimulated by the national railway network. During this time period, literacy among people increased. Because of this, the novel became a very popular icon among citizens. The progress of scientific thought led to important changes in the medical world. Surgery techniques improved, as well did antiseptics. All in all, the Victorian Era was a time of advancement and growth in all areas.
