Course Description and Requirements
    Course Title: Algebra I

    Textbook: Algebra 1 : Concepts and Skills by McDougal Littell

    Course Description: Algebra 1 is currently being taught as an advanced level course and is intended for students who enter with above-average mathematical and problem-solving skills.  This course is to prepare students for Geometry; Algebra II and other advanced math classes.  Prerequisite for this course is Pre-Algebra.

    Topics covered in this course will include the following:  Algebraic Expressions, Equations and Inequalities; Properties of Real Numbers; Graphing and Solving Linear Equations, Inequalities and Functions; Exponents and Exponential Functions;  Quadratic Equations and Functions;  Polynomials and Factoring; Rational Expressions and Equations; Radicals and Connections to Geometry.

    Grading System: Grades will be based on points earned from unit assessments, homework assignments, weekly homework quizzes, problem assignments and daily quick quizzes.

     The following standard percentages will be used:
     100(+)%  -  90%  =  A
      89%  -  80%  =  B
      79%  -  70%  =  C
      69%  -  60%  =  D
       Below 60%  =  F

    Homework: Homework will be assigned and checked daily (Mon-Fri).  It is due at the beginning of class the following day.  Work must be shown on your homework in order to receive credit.  A homework quiz will be given at the end of each week to check for accuracy and understanding.  All homework needs to be saved therefore a spiral notebook is recommended.  (25% of grade)

    Tests and quizzes: Tests will be given at the end of each unit (approximately every 3 weeks).  Quizzes will be given weekly to check for understanding. Graded tests will be sent home for parent signature.
     (55% of grade)

    Quick Quizzes (warm-ups): Warm-ups will be given daily.  Books and notes may be used so it is essential that you bring your book to class each day.  (10% of grade)

    Class Participation: Being prepared for class (bringing all materials to class) and participating appropriately in class is essential for success as a student.  (10% of grade)

    Mark-up Work: The school’s late policy, as explained in the student handbook, will be followed.

    Additional Information: The following materials should be purchased and brought to class each day:

        • An Organized Notebook (Sections for homework, classwork/notes, returned assignments, returned quick quizzes, tool kits).
        • A spiral notebook may be used for homework and kept in  your binder.  This helps keep homework from being misplaced.
        • Scientific Calculator (for home use)  TI-34 calculators will be available in class but may not be taken from class.
        • Graph Paper
        •  Assignment Book
        •  #2 pencils with erasers or a mechanical pencil with extra lead
        •  A centimeter/inch ruler (for home use)
        •  A 6” protractor (for home use).


    Class Rules:

    1. Be in your seat when the class starts.
    2. Bring all the materials listed above (including your textbook) to class daily.
    3. Be respectful of students and teacher(s) by listening “QUIETLY” when they are speaking.  You will
        appreciate this same courtesy when it is your turn to speak.
    4. Please RAISE YOUR HAND if you wish to speak and wait to be called on.
    5. NO FOOD, DRINKS OR GUM IN CLASS!!
    6. Remain in you seat during class.  If you need to get up, please raise your hand and ask.
    7. Please use the restroom and go to your locker before class begins.
